Practice Workbook: Sewing Machine

← Back to: Mastering the straight stitch, zigzag, and hem

Progressive exercises to master straight stitch and zigzag.

Learning to sew doesn’t start with making an item.
It starts with mastering the movement.

This practice workbook lets you work on:

  • straight-stitch consistency
  • handling corners
  • pivoting
  • curves
  • keeping a consistent seam allowance
  • zigzag
  • overcasting

Without wasting fabric.

What is this workbook for?

It teaches you to:

  • guide the machine without pushing
  • stabilize your speed
  • look ahead of the needle
  • control stitch width and length

This isn’t a decorative project.
It’s a training tool.

How to use it?

The workbook offers three practice levels:

On paper (without thread)

Set your straight stitch to 2.5 mm.
Remove the top thread and the bobbin.

Sew directly on the printed lines.

Goal:

  • understand the movement
  • control speed
  • steady your hands

On paper with thread

Same settings.

Add:

  • backstitches
  • checking the underside

Fold the sheet to simulate a hem.
Topstitch at a consistent distance.

You’ll work on precision without pressure.

On fabric

Trace the lines through the paper onto a light, fine cotton (100 to 130 g/m²).

You add one difficulty:

  • the fabric moves
  • tension comes into play
  • consistency becomes real

What you’ll practice

The workbook includes:

  • continuous lines
  • 1 cm strips
  • squares and corners
  • hexagons
  • star
  • semi-circles
  • circles
  • continuous curves
  • zigzag strips
  • simulated overcasting
  • stabilizing a curved edge

You’ll improve step by step.

Important

Paper dulls the needle slightly.

After the paper exercises,
replace your needle before moving on to fabric.

Why am I offering it?

Because you improve faster by repeating than by piling up projects.

A garment sewn without proper guidance will stay approximate.
A mastered movement will stay with you everywhere.
